In the summer of ‘85, Robin Spiers stepped onto center court and a wave of emotion swept through his body. For this rising 17-year–old tennis star, it was a sort of homecoming. He’d been playing tennis since he was five, and on this day, after studying away with Tennis Canada, he had returned to achieve one of his greatest personal victories with his parents proudly cheering him on from the stands.
An Emotional Victory
Robin will be the first to admit he wasn’t playing his best tennis that day. But that’s what made the accomplishment so truly rewarding. Thanks to the three ‘D’s, the qualities of determination, dedication and discipline that he had developed through the sport, he was able to rise to the challenge and bring home the victory. “It was a very emotional win,” says Robin. “My parents were there which is why this championship meant more than just another title. It was a testament to the emotional and financial commitment they had invested in me.”
The Dividends of Hard Work
Robin went on to excel in professional tennis for more than 15 years. He won six national and two international titles as well as over 20 provincial titles. But while he never won a Grand Slam, he’s received more from this sport than he ever could have asked for. He developed a competitive fire that has allowed him to succeed on and off the court. He was able to travel the world and discover cultures and destinations most people only read about. And best of all, he met his wife, Nichola, through the sport that has always meant so much to him.
